If there’s any doubt about the Rolling Stones’ status as the world’s most worshipped rock band, they are put to rest in this tour of Latin America, where performances in stadium after stadium prove that only the Pope can draw larger crowds.
From Buenos Aires to Brazil and beyond, Jagger and Richards and company light up audiences who know the words to their classics as well as anyone in Britain or the USA.
Yet we also see an intimate side to the band. Mick and Keith reminisce about past trips on the road, and then ease into an impromptu version of Country Honk that reminds us that these musicians still love the music that they play. An unaffected Ron Wood talks about his own paintings and the palette of street art.
If there’s an El Dorado on this journey, it is Havana, the capital of a country with its own rich musical tradition - rich in everything but rock and roll, that is. As the band plays “It’s Only Rock and Roll,” it’s evident that Cuba never had it quite like this. You can even hear Jagger speak Spanish in this crowd-pleaser. Once again, a foreign audience seems to have learned its English from his lyrics.
Paul Dugdale - a director who found his niche in portraits of rock musicians, Dugdale has made music videos and documentaries that include Adele Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2011) and The Rolling Stones: Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live (2013).
