Alphonse Tram finds a corpse on the Paris Metro, and - inexplicably - the murder weapon is Tram's misplaced pocketknife. Tram attempts to contact the authorities, but alcoholic police detective Morvandieu couldn't care less. Then an eccentric killer befriends Tram, and the two recruit Morvandieu to join them as they commit a series of brutal crimes.

Bertrand Blier won his first César Award for his offbeat original screenplay, a black comedy in which he paired frequent star Gérard Depardieu and his own father Bernard Blier. The film cunningly reverses the conventions of the crime thriller to comment on the alienating and dehumanizing effects of contemporary urban life.

Filmography: Tenue de soirée (1986), Notre histoire (1984), Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (1978), Les Valseuses (1974).
