Five-part documentary series

Chef Asaf Doktor – pioneer of contemporary local cuisine and owner of the restaurants Ha’Achim, Dok, and Abie – and Dr. Jeremy Fogel – scholar of modern Jewish philosophy and founder of the podcast Think&Drink Different – embark on a scholarly yet playful journey through the ancient Jewish menu, from the era attributed to Abraham to the end of the Mishnaic period (around 2,300 years).

Along the way, they trace flavors and aromas, spiritual and medicinal contexts, and the ways food shaped daily life in this formative era of Judaism. Through the menu, they explore how ancient Jews really lived – beyond the heroic biblical stories: what they feared, what they loved. By piecing together this culinary puzzle, and through the lens of this land's deep history, the hosts reflect on their own lives and on us as a nation, distilling lessons from the past and perhaps laying a foundation for renewal.

The series is based on the extensive research of Dr. Tova Dickstein, a leading scholar of biblical-era food and author of Journey to the Roots: Following the Forgotten Stories and Flavors of Israeli Food (Ofir Bikurim Publishing House). Structured around five key ingredients of the ancient Land of Israel – flour, vegetables, legumes, fish, and meat – the series combines history, culture, and taste. At the festival, the episodes Flour and Meat will be screened.
