In the charred ruins of 1945 Tokyo, a young orphan daughter of musicians disguises herself as a boy to survive the underworld, while her former teacher— haunted by guilt and her own needs of surviving—sets to retrace the girl’s vanished footsteps.

The new film from Miwa Nishikawa (The Long Excuse, 2016 Haifa IFF) comes to the festival directly from its world premiere at Toronto, where it opened the Platform competition. The epic, deeply human postwar drama, called by the critics ‘a historical gem’, draws on years of archival testimonies regarding Japan's postwar war orphans.
