In the heart of Greenwich Village, amid high-priced boutiques, higher-priced restaurants and even higher-priced apartments, an artisan makes guitars by hand. Rick Kelly, proprietor of Carmine Street Guitars, is a holdout from an earlier era when artisans’ shops lined the streets of Greenwich Village. Working with his mother and a young apprentice, Kelly makes and repairs instruments for the likes of Bob Dylan, who got his start around the corner.
Ron Mann’s intimate look at Kelly’s work over five days is a meditation on the creation of beautiful objects that give pleasure. The documentary is also a grim commentary on New York, where the artisans and musicians who brought life to Greenwich Village are now priced out of the once-vibrant neighborhood.
The screening will be followed by a mastercalss with Director Ron Mann.
