In 1961, young Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev arrives in Paris to perform with the Kirov Ballet. Nureyev immediately falls in love with the city, but his KGB minders become increasingly suspicious of his behavior and his developing friendship with young Chilean heiress Clara Saint.

Award-winning actor/director Ralph Fiennes works from a script by David Hare to tell the story of the legendary ballet dancer and his defection to the West. Professional dancer Oleg Ivenko, in his first acting role, brings true elegance to the many dance segments.
