In 1998, in a Jewish enclave within a mostly-Muslim region of the Caucasus, 24-year-old Ilana works in her father’s garage. Her family is rocked when her younger brother David and his fiancée are abducted, with the kidnappers demanding a steep price for their ransom. Ilana and her parents rule out involving the police, but how far are they willing to go to save David?

Winner of the Fipresci Prize in Cannes this year, Kantemir Balagov’s stunning, disturbing debut touches on family relations, ethnic tensions and ethical dilemmas.
