Three decades after German-American pilot Dieter Dengler was shot down over Laos, he returns to the places where he was held prisoner during the early years of the Vietnam War. Werner Herzog travels with Dieter to the important locations in his history, re-enacting some of his remarkable journey and weaving a vivid portrait of a remarkable life.

Herzog has often blurred the conventional distinction between fiction and nonfiction, claiming that “art contains more truth than reality”, and Little Dieter Needs to Fly is no exception. Herzog heightens the emotional effectiveness and entertainment values of the true story without violating the essential facts. In 2006 Herzog remade the material into a feature film called Rescue Dawn, starring Christian Bale.

Filmography: Queen of the Desert (2015), Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009), Stroszek (1977), Heart of Glass (1976), Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972).
