Italian filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi trains his eye on Naples and life in the region between Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, where the threat of seismic activity is ever present. The ground trembles periodically, and the fumaroles of the Phlegraean Fields taint the air. Below the clouds lies a territory crisscrossed by locals, worshippers, tourists, and archaeologists. The land that skirts the gulf is a vast time machine.
The black-and-white documentary Below the Clouds comes to Haifa directly from the official competition at the Venice Festival, where it won a Special Jury Prize. Rosi lived for three years in the shadow of Vesuvius, searching for traces of history, the passage of time, and the remnants of everyday life - and filmed it all in poetic black and white.
Filmography: In viaggio (2022), Fire at Sea (2016), Sacro Gra (2013).
It is presented in a new festival section dedicated to bold, original, and creative cinema.
