Romania, 1989. In the twilight of Nicolae Ceaușescu's dictatorship, in a small and isolated town, ten-year-old Maria is the last person to witness her sister vanish before her eyes. Torn apart by the loss, she tries to make sense of a new and terrifying reality. Can she summon the courage to grow up?

The new film from Mihai Mincan (To the North, Haifa Festival 2022) arrives at the festival directly from its premieres at the Venice and Toronto Festivals. Mincan presents a personal film, “Elusive, troubling and densely-crafted” (Screen), that explores how a child processes trauma and loss against the backdrop of a collapsing political system.

Filmography: To the North (2022).

It is presented in a new festival section dedicated to bold, original, and creative cinema.
