Chaim Topol was the Israeli actor who went further than any other. Twice, he made it all the way to the Academy Awards. That is precisely why the more intriguing question is not how he succeeded, but why he did not go much further. Throughout his career, he repeatedly made surprising choices, including refusing to take part in the sketch that became Sallah Shabati and turning down the lead role in Fiddler on the Roof.
Through his personal archive and the portraits he drew throughout his life, the film revisits the moments when he made crucial choices, and those in which he nearly passed up the roles that would define his career. What emerges is a man far more complex than the familiar charismatic star. An actor, inventor and Mossad operative who gradually began devoting more and more of his energy to an entirely different world, far from the spotlight.
