Michelsen, a solitary and rootless truck driver, is forced into retirement. He sets out on his last trip driving freight to the southern tip of Chilean Patagonia. The long and arduous drive through the magnificent, luxuriant landscape, past lakes and extensive glaciers, becomes a journey of illumination; for upon facing the end of the road Michelsen manages to redeem himself from past mistakes.
