Red Rocket

"While “Red Rocket” continues the “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project” filmmaker’s hot streak of unpatronizing, street-level stories about sex work in the survival economy, the movie immediately establishes a new visual approach to that familiar terrain.

Mikey Saber, a wildly narcissistic former porn star fallen on hard times, has returned from L.A. to his depressed hometown of Texas City, reconnecting with his skeptical, drug-dependent estranged wife and mother-in-law, and using his wily charms to ingratiate himself into a community of people he couldn’t care less about.

The audacious new film from Sean Baker (The Florida Project, 2017 Haifa Festival), comes to Haifa from its premiere at the Cannes Festival. Red Rocket is a darkly funny, raw, and humane portrait of a uniquely American hustler and a hometown that barely tolerates him. Simon Rex is terrifically oily in the lead.

Filmography: The Florida Project (2017), Tangerine (2015), Starlet (2012), Prince of Broadway (2008), Take Out (2004), Four Letter Words (2000).
