Kolkata, India, August 1948. Teresa, Mother Superior of the convent of the Sisters of Loreto, is anxiously waiting for the letter that will finally allow her to leave her monastery and found a new order in response to the call she has received from God. But just as everything seems set, she faces a dilemma that challenges her own ambitions and faith, at a major turning point in her life.

The Opening Film of the Horizons section at this year's Venice Festival, Mother offers a glimpse into the formative years of one of history's most complex religious figures. Filmmaker Teona Strugar Mitevska seeks to “demystify the perfect saint,” with Noomi Rapace in the title role.

The filmmaker “shakes up the idealized image of this “star of Christianity” in order to turn her into a punk icon – one who is not modern, but rather timeless in her power and determination” - Cineeuropa

This film is also subtitled in Arabic.

Filmography: The Happiest Man in the World (2022), God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunija (2019).
